I wish I could say I had a lot of deep, meaningful quotes that I live by and can share with the rest of you. I only have one that I keep going back to time and time again. The cool thing is I can link it back to my Week 3 Challenge Post: Favorite TV Shows. My favorite quote comes from The West Wing season two, 2-part premiere “In the Shadow of Two Gunman” The scene is flashback exchange between then, presidential candidate Josiah Bartlet and his then Campaign Manager Leo McGarry:

Leo McGarry: Because I’m tired of it: year after year after year after year having to choose between the lesser of who cares. Of trying to get myself excited about a candidate who can speak in complete sentences. Of setting the bar so low, I can hardly bear to look at it. They say a good man can’t get elected President. I don’t believe that. Do you?
Jed Bartlet: And you think I’m that man?
Leo: Yes!
Bartlet: Doesn’t it matter that I’m not as sure?
Leo McGarry: Nah. “Act as if ye have faith and faith shall be given to you.” Put another way: Fake it ’til you make it!

I could write an entire post on how much I love Leo McGarry, but that’s for another day. :)

I can’t say how many times I’ve put this quote into action over the years. Although, I will say it is more the second half of the statement than the first. I used to be an optimist when I was younger. Sadly, as I’ve matured (heh, yeah right), I’ve become more of a cynic and my faith has been tested over and over again. I can honestly say that I’ve never entirely lost my faith, but it’s just not as strong as it used to be.

“Fake it ’til ya make it”, on the other hand, oh boy. I think, on some level, I do that every day. As I’m trying to make my way through parenthood, my writing work, being a good wife, my weight loss…whatever. Most days I wonder how I’m going to get it all done or get through it without losing my mind. Every time, I hear Leo’s words in my head and it gives me the motivation to push forward.

I’m not ever sure I’m going to fee like I’ve “made it” in any of these areas of my life, but it’s a continual process and as long as I’m moving in the right direction, I’ll just keep “faking it.” It seems to be working well, overall!
