I love music. Sometimes I feel I have a constant soundtrack playing around me. I can’t work without it; I can’t drive without it; I can’t even sleep without some sort of music playing in the background.

Hearing a certain song can bring me back to both an exact memory or simply just a feeling I had a certain time in my life. I can recall what songs I listened to on the radio as a kid and swore the artists played live in the station (Come Sail Away by Styx)–I was crushed when I finally figured out that it was a mere recording every hour! Whenever I hear the original Footloose soundtrack or Michael Jackson’s Thriller, I am immediately transported to my junior high field trips. I know what songs I listened to when some guy broke my heart–they still tug at my soul a little–and the songs I happily connect with the countless memories Jon and I have made over the years (the original Les Miz soundtrack, Enya, Bolero, Anne Murray’s Can I Have this Dance–our wedding song–Benny and Joon’s 500 Miles and the list goes on.)

A quick glance at my iTunes library shows nearly 6,000 songs. How the hell am I supposed to choose a favorite or even a few from all of them? Honestly, my favorites change from day-to-day.

So, I guess for today, here is a list of my favorites:

Circadian by David Cook: The lead track from Cook’s third album This Loud Morning is killer. It is an anthem, a cry for salvation from the world closing in around him and creating too much noise.

Mayday! Somebody save me now. I’m closing my eyes ‘cuz once the sun rises it’s out of my hands.

Who hasn’t felt that way? I realize Cook is an “Idol winner” and many dismiss his music for that very reason. Take my advice and check out this album or his pre-Idol album Analog Heart (which can be tricky to find.) Powerful stuff!

Sunday Morning by Maroon 5 – Off the Songs About Jane album, Maroon 5 gets jazzy with this song. If you only know M5 for Payphone, Moves Like Jagger or Wake Up Call (all freakin’ awesome songs, btw), then you only know part of their story. Adam Levine cites Stevie Wonder as a major musical influence and Sunday Morning is a tribute to him in every sense of the word. I was thrilled when M5 included this song on both playlists for the concerts we saw earlier this year.

In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins – Many consider this Phil’s signature song because we get to hear the classic drum lead into the chorus as well as listen to a captivating story. It’s an ominous, threatening song and more amazing to hear live than even on the Face Value album. I do hate the remix version I hear on radio these days; I’m not sure Phil did this or someone in a studio decided it was a good idea, but LEAVE THE ORIGINAL ALONE! It’s stripped down and doesn’t need some drum machine behind it. That’s the song’s haunting beauty. Yeah, just leave it alone.

Disney Parks Music from Walt Disney World – As a certified Disney Dweeb, I must include my beloved music from my favorite place in the world. Sure, the movie soundtracks are incredible, but anyone who has gone to the parks and takes the time to listen to the background music or listens to any of the firework shows’ soundtracks knows Disney has an unmatched talent in capturing a mood to make an experience even more magical. Overall, Epcot has the best music for just background mood music or attraction soundtracks. There is an official Four Parks, One World 2 CD set out there, but you can also download it on iTunes. If you don’t want to spend the money, check out MouseWorld Radio which plays Disney parks music 24/7. Yes, really.

Guilty Pleasures: these are the songs I will admit I listen to in the car and might sing along a little too loudly: the entire Wicked soundtrack, Determinate from the Lemonade Mouth soundtrack, Tainted Love by Soft Cell, a number of songs by Neil Diamond, The Monkees, Before He Cheats and Blown Away by Carrie Underwood and almost every 80s compilation cd out there.

I am open to change these as the mood strikes!

What are your favorites–including your Guilty Pleasures!! Fess Up!
